Wow! It has been 9 months since I posted last! Things have been crazy busy...but I want to make it a point to post pics on a regular basis!! So here are a couple I took of Mason the other day:) Hopefully I'll catch some Reece someday this weekend!

CDLS AWARENESS DAY!!!

Today marks the day of Cornelia de Lange Syndrome's 20th Anniversary for CDLS Awareness. If you are not familiar with the syndrome, please visit the link above. Each year, thousands of children are born with this rare syndrome but are not diagnosed due to the lack of education of the syndrome. As you can see on the site, all the children have similar physical features. Turned up little noses, thick hair and arched eyebrows, small in stature, are just to name a few of the traits. Along with physical abnormalities, medical conditions are all too common. Acid reflux, severe intestinal problems, heart defects, and cleft and raised palets just to name a few. The key to getting these children to their full abilities and functions is early intervention. Without early diagnosis, early intervention is not a possiblity. Therapies such as phisical, occupational, speech, and developmental can make all the difference in these children.
Almost excactly one year ago, my son Mason was born with CDLS. We were shocked, devastated, and confused. We were so lucky to have Mason diagnosed the day he was born...by a fluke actually. The neonatoloist saw a child with the syndrome in his days as a resident...that was 30 years prior!!! My husband went to the net and found the Foundation for CDLS right away and started educating himself. I was not ready for that yet....I needed to bond with my baby first. First and foremost, he was my baby and he was just beautiful to me. The first couple days were so painful. I don't know why, but I pretended I knew the full extent of the syndrome....when people would tell me a few tidbits here and there, I would just go in the bathroom and cry. It was hard coming to terms that my child is not going to grow up like everyone else....but that is okay. He has brought so much joy into this world, to me, my husband, and our oldest son, Reece. He has a smile that goes on forever and touches everyone he meets.

When I got home from the hospital....unfortunatly without Mason, I was a wreck. I didn't know what the future held for Mason...for us. That was so incredibly scary. Scott showed me a blog he found about another CDLS boy. His name too is Mason! I was just in awe of this little angel. He was so beautiful and he was always happy and smiling. His mom Misty, was kind enough to talk with my husband and email us with support, comfort, and advice. I have a special place in my heart for Misty's Mason.....I knew as soon as I read his story and saw his happiness, that Mason was going to be happy...and that is all that mattered to me. Thank you Misty and Mason!!! Your comfort has meant so much to our family as well as the help from our families and friends!! The CDLS families and community have been fabulous as well. I have gotten to talk to some incredible moms!!!

Well, I ordered Mason's Birthday invites today. In 4 weeks my baby will be 1!!!! I just can't believe it! He is so small but yet so big!! Where does the time go?

We (uh-yeah we'll just say Scott too) are going all out (overboard is the word Scott would use) for the party!! Custom invites....custom cake....jumpies...the works!! Thanks to my sister Anne Marie for letting us use her huge back yard for the party!! It is going to be great!! My in-laws are coming in including my sister-in-law Michelle and her three kids!! Reece is so excited too!! I can't wait!!

Only a few more weeks unitl my baby is a big boy!! I'll keep you updated on all the ridiculous party planning!!!

Tonight, TNT aired the annual Christmas in Washington special...ya know, the one where all the famous people sing to the president! Well, to my surprise the IU born acapella group Straight No Chaser was performing!! I was so excited!! I have been a big fan since I was about 18.....I was introduced to the group back then by my sister-in-law who's husband, Patrick is one of the founding members of the group.

The group was recently signed to Atlantic Records after someone saw this highly viewed YouTube video of them performing their famous "12 Days of Christmas."

The group was awesome on the special!! Unfortunately, Patrick is not with the group at this time, but he is in the video below.

Please pray for the family and friends of little Nicholas. Nicholas was a very special little boy with CDLS. His mother notified our online support group the other day that he passed away while napping on the couch. He will forever hold a place in our hearts.

Well I voted today. I was excited and have my own political views as does everyone else. I will be glad after tonight is over. I am so sick and tired of people throwing their political beliefs onto others. I have quit reading blogs because people are so ridiculous with this. Ok, so my sister Anne and I took the boys trick-or-treating last night. There was a group of young teenagers dressed in costumes exactly like the picture above, stockings and all!! Did their mothers or fathers see them leave the house???? Maybe they put their costumes on after they left the house...who knows? I was just shocked to see butt cheek all-a-hangin trottin from house to house. Lock up your sons ladies!!! Halloween just got a bit scarier!!!

Poor Mason Bear. He hasn't been able to keep his feedings down today. All he has done is slept. He has had diarrhea a few times tonight and the last time was just horrible. I have only smelled something that horrible in the hospital and it was C-dif. So now I think Mason has C-dif. (ok, I may be overboard, or it is just the crazy nursing student in me, but he has been on Antibiotics since 3 weeks old!). So first thing tomorrow we are heading to good ol Dr. Stroman's office!! I hope all goes well. Feel better my sweet bear!

I can't believe my little guy is 7 already!! Time goes by so quickly. It makes me sad to think that Reece is growing up so quick. It seems like just yesterday he was a little chubby bald baby!!

For his birthday, we celebrated with both sides of the family...it was really nice. My husbands whole family came in from New Jersey! I finally got to meet my niece Olivia for the first time!! She is soooooo adorable!! So smart for a 2 year old!!

Today Reece and I just hung out at home....it was nice. I filled his room up with helium balloons while he was at school...and decorate the house with streamers and signs. He was so excited!! I just love birthdays!!

Ugh!! It has been so hard to blog lately! I feel so out of the loop!! Lots of things have happened in the past few weeks!!

Me: No, why?

Reece: Because first graders eat WHOLE sanwiches!

When did he grow up so fast!! Oh yeah, and he made it a point to give me a kiss goodbye before the bus turned the corner!

Feeling Very Thankful

So, tonight I am feeling very thankful. I just read our church prayer chain and there was a prayer request that I can't stop thinking about. Right now down at Riley's: a 15 year old boy is on a ventilator with a life threatening infection after a routine appendectomy. His chances for survival are very slim. I can't imagine how his parents are feeling, coping, or even functioning.
When Mason was born, we were devastated and scared. My first initial thought was...why me? The past month or so now my feeling has turned into.....thank god it's me! What an amazing boy I have. (Actually 1 of 2 amazing boys) Each day he surprises me! He has such a personality at just 8 weeks old! He may not be what people think of as "normal" but he is such a blessing and I am so grateful to how he has opened my eyes up to a whole new world. Hopefully, I will be able to share that world with people I meet throughout my life.

I am also extremely grateful for my "Sunny Supporters." You know who you are!!!

Well, Scott and I went to my 10 year reunion. We had a lot of fun! It was nice to have a few hours away....I got to see a lot of people I haven't seen in a while! My how everyone changes!!

I found it strange that people I haven't talked to in years would be so forward. For example, in 3 separate instances acquaintances of mine would be on their way to the bar to get drinks. They would offer me a drink and then say "oh wait, aren't you breastfeeding?" Not to mention one was a guy!!! Who asks that? Weird!

I am often asked to describe the experience of raising a child with a disability -- to try to help people who have not shared that unique experience to understand it, to imagine how it would feel. It's like this...When you're going to have a baby, it's like planning a fabulous vacation trip to Italy. You buy a bunch of guidebooks and make your wonderful vacation plans. The coliseum. The Michelangelo David. The gondolas in Venice. You may learn some handy phrases in Italian. It's all very, very exciting.After months of eager anticipation, the day finally arrives. You pack your bags and off you go. Several hours later, the plane lands. The flight attendant comes in and says, "Welcome to Holland.""Holland?!?", you say." What do you mean, Holland? I signed up for Italy! I'm supposed to be in Italy. All my life I've dreamed of going to Italy. ""But there's been a change in the flight plan. They landed in Holland and there you must stay." The important thing is that they haven't taken you to a horrible, disgusting, filthy place, full of pestilence, famine, and disease. It's just a different place.So you must go out and buy new guidebooks. And you must learn a whole new language. And you will meet a whole new group of people you would never have met.It's just a different place. It's slower-paced than Italy, less flashy than Italy. But after you've been there for awhile and you catch your breath, you look around, and you begin to notice that Holland has windmills. Holland has tulips. Holland even has Rembrandts.But everyone you know is busy coming and going from Italy, and they're all bragging about what a wonderful time they had there. And for the rest of your life, you will say, 'Yes, that's where I was supposed to go. That's what I had planned.'And the pain of that will never, ever, ever go away, because the loss of that dream is a very significant loss.But if you spend your life mourning the fact that you didn't get to Italy, you may never be free to enjoy the very special, the very lovely things about Holland.

Just Being Nosey

Well, after being home not only a week, we are back in Indy at Riley Children's Hospital. Mason could barely hold down any feedings so they wanted us to bring him back for fear of dropping anymore weight. Yesterday morning he had surgery for Pyloric Stenosis. This is caused by the enlargment of a stomach muscle that doesn't allow food to go down as it should. So, we had that taken care of along with a G-tube inserted into his belly. This is an alternative feeding method instead of the NG tube in the nose....in the long run, much more comfortable for him. This may not take care of the reflux issue, so another surgery may be necessary, but there is no way of knowing at this point. Mason is still having trouble keeping down feedings, but that will happen until he heals a bit more. He is quite the little trooper. He sleeps alot. He had a rough night last night, but we expected that being just a few hours out of surgery. Hopefully all the feeding issues will be solved and we can come home soon. We really miss Reece, who my wonderful sisters have been watching over...bless their hearts! I seriously don't know what I would do without the support of my family and close friends. My family has gone above and beyond to help us in any way they possibly can. I am so grateful for them and I thank god everyday to have them in my life.

Quick update:

Amazing news!!!! Our Mason had an in depth hearing test and his hearing is perfect!!!! We can't believe it! Apparently, the "other" hospital did the wrong type of hearing test! Anyways, we couldn't be happier right now. God works in mysterious ways!!

Ok...Just Killing Time...You Really Don't Have to Read All of This!

Wow. It is amazing how things change so quickly. We are now currently at Riley's Children's Hospital in Indianapolis. (I will tell you how wonderful it is in a minute).

But this is how our day played out yesterday....quite an eventful day I must say!!

8:00 am- I am in the shower heading up to Community Hospital to see Mason

8:02 am- Still in the shower, Scott comes in to tell me Community got Mason a bed at Riley's and they will be there to pick him up in a few hours.

9:15 am- Scott and I arrive at Community to see Mason and get him all set up for transport....also our final visit with Mason's favorite nurse Diane.

9:20 am- Diane fills mom and dad in on transport details......Riley is on the way to get Mason...By Plane!

9:30-11:00 am- Scott and I feeding Mason and filling out a lot of paper work.

11:00 am- Scary people in Top Gun jumpsuits come to say they are there to take my baby! Mason quickly swept away into the Isolette on a Gurney!

11:20 am- Scott and I arrive at Gary Int. Airport to see off our Mason!

11:45 am- Iceman, Maverick, and Goose, all load Mason and his belongings into the plane. (I am crying).

12:00 am- We Have Liftoff! (can you hear the Top Gun music?) Mason is airborne! (only a 35 min plane ride!!)

Okay, so after that I get home, pack up, get a call Mason got there safely (Whew!), load up the car with Reece coming along......2 + hour car ride and Reece talks the entire time!!

Finally get here...get in to see our Mason.....he is still in one piece and as precious as can be!

Of course Reece is bored and cries he wants to go home! Scott takes Reece down the street to a hotel (which Reece told me was gross and old. Oh yeah and there was a big spider in the shower...EEEK!) Thank goodness I stayed with Mason...except no sleep here...Mason had every test under the sun! This would of taken a month at Community!! But Mason slept through the entire night!! Poor baby, tuckered himself out!

Well, coming here turned out to be a blessing....we are finding things out that we didn't know, or they didn't find at Community. I'll post more later.....

I can't beleive it has been over two weeks since Mason was born. However, it seems as if he has been in the NICU forever now!! It is so exhausting going up 2 sometimes 3 times a day...not to mention getting up twice a night to pump! (I could open my own dairy!) I am not meaning to complain, but I just want to bring my boy home!! It is so hard to leave him every single night. I know he is in good care, but I just want to get him home to start living our lives with him in our everyday activities. Reece asks every day if this is the day Mason gets to come home! I think he is even more impatient than I am!!

Scott and I feel as if we have been on a roller coaster for the past two weeks. Having a child born with a syndrome which no one has ever seen nor heard about can be the most terrifying thing for a parent to experience. The mere thought of my child struggling or hurting just tears me to pieces. At first I kept wondering "Why Me?" But now it is a different "Why Me?" I wonder why God picked me to be the mother of this amazing and special little boy. I have great fears....fears that I will not be everything he needs me to be....fears I cannot even describe. He continues to amaze us everyday....he has already beat a number of odds....he is so much stronger than I could ever be....he is just a little angel!!!

So excited!!! I can't contain myself. Scott, Reece and I are off to sunny Orlando Florida on Saturday for 4 nights for a family vacation! I am really looking forward to this. I had to laugh at this conversation Reece and I had as we were driving past a Subway restaurant the other day.

Reece: Hey Mom, what are those cops doing at Subway?

Me: They are eating lunch..they get to eat there for free ya know!

Me: Because they do alot of good for our community and they are good people.

I know there are just things a mother has to deal with when she is pregnant...but C'MON!!!!!!!

This peeing thing 4-5 times in the middle of the night and about 4-5 times in an hour is just ridiculous!!!! Just when I pee, I have to go again!!! Will it ever end!!! I totally don't mind being pregnant, but the peeing thing is getting out of hand!!!!!!!!!!

Goin' Away!!!

Wow, it has been about a month since my last post!! I keep meaning to post, but I haven't had much time!! I have finals this Thursday and Friday for my 8 week classes.....talk about stress!!

I just can't wait for the weekend...My sister Kathleen and friend Shawnie are going away on a shopping/spa weekend to Woodfield in Shaumburg! (Ree...still time to go!!) I don't think that I was even this excited when I went to Vegas last year!! I think just the idea of relaxing, with no pressure to do anything I don't want to, is enough to make me jump for joy!! I get to sleep in a real bed!!! Whoo hoo! (for those of you who don't know my sleeping arrangements: I have been sleeping on a pancake for the past 8 months!!) I am also gonna pack up some scrap booking supplies so I can work on some things at night!! I just can't wait!! I can honestly say....I am so excited I could just pee my pants ( not out of the ordinary for a prego!)

Out of Control!!

Ok, Things have been a bit out of control lately. Reece's behavior has been everything but acceptable. I know this is a big part because lately I haven't been sticking to his punishments. This is partly because it has been easier for me not to stick with it while Scott is traveling. So, today, I had it.....I stripped him of all electronics: video games, DS, Game Boy, Playstation 2, Computer...you name it. I stripped him of his livley hood!!! Gotta hit em' where it hurts!! Anyways, after a day of misbehaving at my sisters house while I was in school, he is now at the kitchen table with a notebook and pencil writing: I WILL BEHAVE! He has to write it twenty times before he can get up. He has been sitting there for about 40 minutes now. I have to stick to my guns.....I can't give in this time.

So, tomorrow is the big day!!! I can't wait. I hope they are able to tell if the baby is a girl or a boy. Reece will be coming with us, so it should be alot of fun!!! I am looking forward to it!!! (except the whole full bladder thing!!)

Ultrasound Next Week!!!

Boy, time has gone by really fast. I can't beleive that I am 18 weeks already!!! So next Wednesday at 1:00 pm I have my ultrasound!! I am really excited about this.

Although a healthy baby is first and foremost important, I can't help myself in wonering if it is a girl or a boy!!! I kinda think it is a girl....I know every pregnancy is different, but this one is really different for me. My skin is terrible, I am by far much smaller, don't have a huge appetite, and a few other small things that are different. I just don't know!!!

So, I thought it would be fun to get everybody's take on it!!!!

What will it be a boy or a girl??????

They probably won't even be able to tell :)

Trying to find a home in our price range, in a nice area, with a good school system seems to be quite the challenge these days. It is definetly a buyers market right now with all the forclosures and lowering of the rates, but nothing good in this area for our price range. We are struggling with moving into an area with crappy schools and sending Reece to private school, or buying something a bit out of our comfortable price range in a good public school system. I really like the school he is at right now, but it isn't an option as there is no where to live in this district. UGGGH!!! Something must be done before my mother and I kill eachother. while I am thankful for her generosity with letting us live here, I think for the health and saftey for her and myself it is way overdue to move on!!! Ahhh what to do, what to do!?

Why Can't My Kid Act Like That?

Ok, tonight I went to do one of my clients hair and I left amazed. This woman has 6 children under the age of 9. Not only does she have 6 children, but they are all really well behaved.(and this wasn't the first time I have witnessed this) You would of thought that there was only one child in the house the whole time. So, why is it that my one child provides more attention and discipline than someone elses 6 children. I already know that alot of it has to do with parenting skills....but I really want to be a parent like that!! Patient, quiet (because I am loud....a yeller), tackful, and just nice. I have a really good kid, don't get me wrong, but I just want to be a better mom. It is so hard to change the behaviors that I am so used to. There has to be an easier way...ok I guess parenting wasn't made to be easy.......but I just need some help to be a better mom..........maybe the next one will come with a manual.....PARENTING FOR DUMMIES. God if you are listening......it really isn't a bad idea.....go ahead and send me a manual with the next one...I'll pay for shipping!!

Ok this is getting ridiculous....don't these people know I have an itinerary with my stories!!! I am going thru withdrawal...thank goodness Greys and Housewives had 1 new episode to tide me over. As if it wasn't getting bad enough, they have gone and cancelled the Golden Globes....I live for this stuff, I mean award season is starting and no award Shows? OK, SO THIS MORNING MY MOTHER WAS SURE SHE WAS HAVING A HEART ATTACK. (NOTE: THIS ISN'T THE FIRST TIME MY MOTHER WAS SURE THAT SHE WAS HAVING A HEART ATTACK) SHE WAS OUT AT MY AUNTS HOUSE SO I TOLD HER TO CALL AN AMBULANCE...TO THAT SHE REPLIED, "NO I'LL JUST GO BACK TO SLEEP."

LATER THAT MORNING I TALKED WITH MY SISTER AND THIS IS WHAT TOOK PLACE:

ANNE: YEAH, BUT SHE WOULDN'T LET THEM TAKE HER

ME: WTF?

ANNE: I KNOW, I KNOW.....AND THIS IS THE SECOND TIME SHE'S DONE THIS

(OH YES, MY MOM WILL CALL AMBULANCES, BUT SUDDENLY SHE IS CURED BY THE TIME THE PARAMEDICS ARRIVE)

ME: SO NOW WHAT?

ANNE: SHE TOLD THEM SHE WOULD GO TO THE HOSPITAL WHEN SHE GETS HOME!

Reece and I went to dinner at Shawnie and Brian's house tonight. My sister and her family were there also. Reece and my nephew Aidan were playing trains:

Aidan: Hey Reece, come park your train over here at the train station!

Reece: I'm gonna park it over here at the Lord's house!

Reece then parked his train under Shawnie's christmas tree right next to her Nativity Set.

I just love these moments. It really made my night!

As some of you already know, this has been a very difficult week for me. I just am feeling a bit depressed and alone. I knew this was gonna happen, but I just wasn't quite ready for him to leave yet. It came and went so fast. We have been together for quite a few years now, and I feel I put alot into this relationship. I am not sure how the whole long-distance thing is gonna play out, but only time will tell. I guess things happen for a reason, and perhaps it is the best thing for us all. After all, as much as it hurts to say this: he really wasn't pulling his weight around here anyways. His mind just always seemed as if it were somewhere else. I know time is supposed to heal all wounds, but this is gonna take a while for me to get over. So bare with me.....it just has been a bad week.

Ok...either I have a really bad diet or the weird pregnancy food stuff is already kicking in. Is that even possible? All I want to eat lately is lemon rice soup and rolls from round the clock. And today I ventured out and had a pizza sub from subway....with pickles. Oh yeah, and I've gained ten pounds in six weeks. Ewww I can already see where this is heading....late night binge eating, not being able to fit in booths at restaurants, squeezing my fat feet into my cute little black ballet flats....not to mention the adorable ruby red mary-jane heels I just bought. I see my pointy chin starting to turn into two doughy rolls, soon my wedding rings will be cutting off my circulation. Oh yeah and I can't forget the evening grease-up sessions...no not for body building, but for strechmarks. On the other hand...my nails are growning quite nicely!

How I love Pumpkin Carving!!! It was alot of fun. Scott came home for the weekend and he was having as much fun as Reece was, cleaning out the pumpkin guts!! The best thing about Halloween? Is that Christmas season for us starts the day after....That's right!! Last year my tree went up on Nov. 1st. Scott was so embarrased that he wouldn't let me open up our living room blinds. That was until 3 other houses had the trees lit up in the windows on our street!! It was great!! Oh yeah, and the lite 93.9 starts Christmas music in a few days!! Whoo Hoo!!

FINALLY! Reece is finally going to be a big brother!! I am so excited. As most of you know, Reece was a big suprise...pleasant, but Big suprise. So it was such a neat experience to find out that I was pregnant when I really hoped and was ready to be. I am so thankful for all the blessings I have in my life. My husband, son, and all of my family and friends. It is so much more meaningful when there are such wonderful people in my life to share it with. Mama i Bebe here I come!!!! Kids Just Don't Get It!!

If you ask Reece who one of his best friends is he would tell you it is my nephew Aidan. Now, Reece must beg me 3-4 times a day to play with Aidan. When we finally get to Aidan's house, all they do is fight like a couple PMS-ing women!!! They always end up ruining a good time for themselves. So, of course, Kathleen (Aidan's mom) and I are constantly threatening and screaming at them to stop!! I don't recall ever arguing so much with my friends when I was their age, because I knew that if I wanted to play with them, I better not cause a raucous. Kids Just Don't Get It!!!!!!!!
